The Order of Kilimanjaro
Award Recipients for 1995 and 1996
In 1995, AOU conferred the Order of Kilimanjaro on Dr. John T. Biggers, Professor Emeritus, Texas Southern University, for his outstanding contribution in promoting an understanding and appreciation of African and African American cultures through art.

In 1996, the Order of Kilimanjaro was presented to Professor Chinua Achebe - one of the greatest sons of Africa. Professor Achebe is a man whose literary and philosophical works have received worldwide acclaim and recognition. Chronicling and commenting on Nigeria's sweeping changes and growth pains as an independent nation, he published Things Fall Apart in 1959, No Longer At Ease in 1960, and Arrow of God in 1964. His novel, A Man of the People put him in a confrontational role with the military government at that time. Professor Achebe has published novels, short stories, essays, poetry and children's books.

THE ORDER OF KILIMANJARO is an annual traditional African ritual of commendation and recognition of the exemplary contribution of a chosen individual to the advancement of humankind.
