"In 1981, the United Nations designated the third Tuesday in September, the traditional opening date of the General Assembly, as the International Day of Peace. This is the first global holiday the world has ever known, and you can be a part of it! Simply take a Minute of Silence for world peace at 12 noon in your time zone, followed by "May Peace Prevail on Earth." Then choose an activity to make your home or community a more peaceful place.
Last year, 400 schools in 32 countries celebrated the International Day of Peace. If your school would like to participate on September 15, please contact us for a flyer, and we'll let you know about a special art project with the UN CyberSchoolBus. If your school is online, check out the International Day of Peace at www.worldpeace.org/peaceday.
NOTE: World Peace Day is celebrated in Japan on August 6, when children gather to release thousands of origami cranes from the top of a tower in memory of Sadako Sasaki, the 12-year-old girl who began the tradition of paperfolding cranes as a symbol of world peace.
Emily Nghiem is offering free origami workshops all summer, up to the day of the Houston Peace and Justice Picnic at the end of September. For more information, contact Lee Loe at 524-2682 or Herb Rothschild at 743-9022.
