A Peace Poem
Has anyone shown Saddam Hussein
How to fold a Japanese paper crane?
Or taken him to a one-act play?
Or the orchestra? Or a jazz ballet?
Has anyone made him a Father's Day card?
Or brought him a lizard from his own backyard?
Or covered his cigar box with macaroni?
Or smiled at him through a slice of bologna?
And said: We hate fighting as much as you do --
Our women and children are suffering, too.
Have we forgotten what Life is for?
It's making Art, not making war.

CALL FOR ACTION
TO END THE ON-GOING THREAT OF NUCLEAR ARMS

As the leading nuclear power and sole remaining superpower, our nation could do much to promote complete abolition of nuclear weapons. That our government doesn't is both our shame and our opportunity. It means you and I can once again play a role in shaping human destiny.

Here are meaningful ways we can act:

  • Immediately call the White House hotline and ask Clinton to end all plutonium production, nuclear weapons research and development, and subcritical testing. Hotline number is 202/456-1111. E-mail is president@whitehouse.gov.

  • On Thursday, July 16 participate in Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) National Call-in Day by contacting Texas Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and Phil Gramm asking that they help bring the CTBT to the floor for debate and a vote. Hutchison's local number: 713/653-3456; Gramm's: 713/718-4000.

  • On Saturday, August 1 at 10 a.m. bring children to the First Congregational Church to fold origami peace cranes and hear the story of Sadako Sasaki. The church is at 10840 Beinhorn and is readily accessible via I-10. Take I-10 to the Voss/Bingle exit, Turn south on Voss to the first traffic light, which is Beinhorn. Take a right; the church is on right.

  • On August 6 at 10 a.m. come to the Rothko Chapel at Sul Ross and Yupon for a commemorative service and news conference. The cranes will be displayed.
