GET READY TO R.A.P. April 7 to 13
Poetry to the people!!!
poetry shouldn’t just be for poets nor should poetry reading and performance be done
just for poets…can we take poetry to the people? sure we can… We need to give our words
to others besides the poets and poetry fans who show up at organized events… Will we get
past our shyness or fear of rejection to read our words to people we do not even know or
even to people we do know that do not usually hear our poetry? Some poets spill their
words all over the place more often than not. Okay, even for those confident poets: What
we need to do is give every poet a reason to do this…a challenge…an excuse to read aloud
poetry...
HIP hereby designates the week of April 7 to April 13 to be “Read Aloud Poetry
(RAP) Week”
In support of National Poetry Month, during “RAP” week we want you to get your poems
out and READ them…to co-workers, a family member, the bank teller or your best friend…
Get together with other poets or go out on your own and read impromptu in the park, at
the grocery store, at the mall, in a café, on the street, at the kids’ soccer game or
wherever you are…We challenge you to take your words to the people!
If you cannot bear
to read your own poetry thus, just read your favorite bard’s poems instead!
And when you
have done this, let us know what happened. Record your responses, audience responses, your
impressions and sent to us via email so we can post it in a RAP Log book that will be on view
at the April 12, DiverseWorks event for all to make entries and view, and will eventually be
accessible on the web. Support the community effort to get poetry out and about and let us
know about it!
